One year on

Today marks a year since I set off on the first of my six Interrail adventures in 2023. I’ve been looking back at the posts I added at the time, and at the many photos and videos that didn’t make it onto the diary.

Day 12 – Back home, and already thinking about the next leg

Lille – London St Pancras – London Euston – Stafford – Stone

Day 11 – the highest railway passage in Europe

Tirano – Pontresina – Samedan – Chur – Basel – Strasbourg – Paris – Lille

Day 10 – Genoa, then through Milan and into the mountains

La Spezia – Genova – Milano – Tirano

Day 9 – A change of plan, La Spezia, and a visit to Cinque Terre

Verona – Florence – La Spezia – Cinque Terre (Manarola and Vernazza) – La Spezia

Day 8 – over the Alps and down into Italy

Salzburg – Innsbruck – Verona

Day 7 – Heading into the Austrian mountains

Vienna – Bruck an der Mur – Leoben – Stainach Irdning – Attnang Puchheim – Salzburg

Day 6 – Berlin to Vienna on the high speed ICE train

Berlin – Nuernberg – Wien (Vienna)

Day 5 – Berlin, visit to the East Side Gallery and a special evening

One of the things I love about this city is that it confronts it’s difficult history head on.

Day 4 – Wernigerode – Berlin, and a look at the Reichstag

Wernigerode – Magdeburg – Rosslau – Berlin

Day 3 – Harzer Schmalspurbahnen

Wernigerode – Brocken – Wernigerode
OK that’s a real mouthful. HSB is better known to English speakers as the Harz railway, a network of narrow gauge railways, of which the line to the summit of the Brocken is the most dramatic.

Day 2 – Wuppertal and the legendary suspended railway

Antwerp – Breda – Eindhoven – Venlo – Breyell – Wuppertal – Hannover – Goslar – Wernigerode.
Seven trains, a rail replacement bus, and three trips on the Schwebebahn. This was an epic day with a bucket list item well and truly ticked off.

Day 1 – getting off the island

Stone > Euston > St Pancras > Brussels > Antwerp
Where several trains run on time but battery life becomes an early theme
